When to expect SAT Results?

You can expect to receive your SAT results around 2 weeks from your initial test date. The exact timelines may vary due to the volume of candidates on each individual test day but 13 days is a good rule of thumb if you’re planning ahead.

SATs are usually given on a Saturday and SAT results are usually given on the 2nd Friday after your test date. However, summer test dates (June dates) usually take longer at 5 weeks, due to a large number of test takers at this time.

If you take your test on a school date (instead of Saturday), you can expect your SAT results to take a little longer, generally between 21-28 days after your exam.

Cut-off for SAT Results

The SAT is a standardized test, so it’s used to determine your academic ability universally against the thousands of other test takers. The SAT changes with every new exam so there is no universal SAT cutoff– it isn’t a pass/fail system, but one used to measure your level against other candidates.

But you can estimate what to expect from your SAT results based on which colleges you are applying to. To meet the entry requirements of many leading global universities the bar is on average set at above 1200.

Ivy league universities have a higher benchmark of 1500, with a score of above 680 in Math and above 600 in Reading and Writing sections. These universities include Harvard, Yale and MIT to name few.

Universities often have cutoffs for their admission requirements, but these vary greatly from institution to institution, so checking entry requirements is a good practice for anyone applying as they change with the average SAT results of that attempt/year.

You can also check the College Board prediction for the SAT Results for the estimated requirements to get into your dream college.

How to Get the Highest Score on the SAT?

To get the highest possible score on the SAT you would need to score a perfect 800 in both math and reading sections of the paper to amount to 1600 total. But out of the 2 million students who take the SAT every year, only 500 get SAT results that are a  perfect score- that’s 0.03%.

But you can still ensure you secure a great score in a top percentile, and secure your spot in your dream college with the right practice and preparation to secure the best SAT results for you.

SAT Results – Score Percentiles

Your SAT Score Percentile indicates how well you performed on your test in relation to all other test takers. You can say being in the 50th+ percentile is “good” as it implies you have scored better and gotten better SAT results than half the test takers. However, this percentile often won’t make the cut for most of the best Universities.

So to really have a “good” percentile you want to aim to get a 75th percentile, putting you in the top quarter of test takers, making your SAT results in the top 25%.

The highest percentile is the 99+th percentile which means you have done better than more than 99% of all other test takers, these are potentially the best SAT results but by no means are they common, only 1% of test takers achieve these SAT results!

Percentile to score conversions change every year based on how hard the test was, and the over all candidate level so you can only estimate the rates, but they have been done so below:

PercentileScore
99+1560-1600
991520-1550
951430-1440
901350
851290
801240-1250
751200-1210
501040-1050

How long is my SAT score valid?

Your SAT result is valid for 5 years (or until there is criteria change for the SAT).

How many times can you take the SAT exam?

What is a good SAT score?

Test takers who secure a score of above 1400 composite score are generally ranked in the top 5% of all candidates. But 1400 is not the only SAT result that is a “good SAT score.” This is very subjective, as the mean SAT results may change from year to year depending on how hard the test was that attempt, and the average performance of the pool of candidates.

So instead of having a benchmark of a good SAT score, or a SAT Cutoff score, we can measure performance in terms of a SAT Cutoff based on percentile of SAT Results as explained above. .

How important is the SAT for college admission?

SAT results are a requirement for admission to many of the top colleges in the US and Canada, but it is not necessary worldwide like within India or the UK. So taking the SAT is largely dependent on the place you are applying to as it could either prove to be a waste of your time or prove invaluable to your application.

If you are planning to take the SATs to improve your CV, and thus your chances of getting into university there are other routes you can take that are less expensive and potentially more enriching. For example, instead of spending a year studying and hundreds of dollars on reattempting your SAT test, you could try out Clever Harvey’s 5 week JuniorMBA program for teens.
