Geologists study the solid, liquid, and gaseous matter that makes up Earth and other terrestrial planets, as well as the processes that shape them. Geologists investigate the geological history of the Earth. The better they understand Earth’s history, the better they will be able to predict how past events and processes will influence the future.

How to become a Geologist

Step 1: Stream Selection

If you wish to follow geology as a career, you must complete the higher secondary examination in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as your subjects. Choosing Geology (which is only offered by a few boards) as one of your disciplines gives you an advantage in admission to select universities.

Step 2: Educational Qualification

Many universities in India and overseas offer a three-year bachelor’s degree in geology.

Some universities, such as Delhi University, offer a five-year dual BSc-MSc integrated degree in geology.

After finishing a BSc in Geology, students can pursue a Master’s degree in Geology/Applied Geology for two years.

Some universities will admit BA/BSc/BCom/BTech graduates from any discipline to MSc Geology if they have a high percentage aggregate and have taken the Science stream at the 10+2 level.

(i) How to become a Geologist after 10th

Diploma programs for geology are only available after 10+2. To pursue a diploma in geology, you must ensure that you have at least a 55 percent grade point average in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry in your 10th grade. Diploma courses have a duration of usually one year but it varies from institution to institution. 

(ii) How to become a geologist after 12th

To become a geologist, you must have passed the 10+2 test in any stream and can enrol in a bachelor’s program at any university majoring in geology.

After receiving your bachelor’s degree, you may pursue a master’s degree. If you want to get accepted into government colleges, you can take a national exam like the GATE. while other colleges offer their own entrance tests.
